Families Shattered by Failure to Warn of Dangers of Granuflo and NaturaLyte Dialysis Products

A widow in Ohio filed a wrongful death lawsuit in November alleging that her husband’s fatal heart attack during kidney dialysis treatment was caused by Fresenius Medical Care’s failure to provide adequate warnings about the side effects of Granuflo, a dialysis product.

As a product liability attorney who is investigating claims of serious and fatal side effects caused by Fresenius dialysis products, the story of Deborah and Charles Swigert is painfully familiar to the stories I hear. The death of Charles Swigert, who was only 56 and left behind a wife and two children, was a preventable personal tragedy, like so many others.

People trust that the medical products used in their treatment are safely manufactured and administered and that the side effects are well understood. In fact, medical product manufacturers have a legal obligation to make and market products that are safe and effective when used as intended and to warn of known side effects.

Earlier this year, the Food and Drug Administration issued a Class I recall of dialysis drugs NaturaLyte Liquid and Granuflo acid concentrate manufactured by Fresenius Medical Care North America. Class I recalls represent the FDA’s most serious kind of recall. They’re issued when there is a reasonable probability that the use of a medical product or prescription drug will cause serious injury or death.

Fresenius is the world’s largest provider of dialysis products and services. The products are formulated for kidney dialysis patients. Dialysis patients have a build-up of acid in their blood, a condition known as acidosis. Dialysis neutralizes the acid through the use of bicarbonate.

As a product attorney based in Chicago, I’ve dedicated my legal career to helping people who have been harmed by unsafe medical products, including Granuflo and NaturaLyte products. No amount of compensation will replace a lost loved one. But The Driscoll Firm, LLC, is committed to holding accountable those medical manufacturers who put unsafe products on the market which cause harm to people.

Dialysis patients using Granuflo and NaturaLyte products are much more likely to experience sudden cardiac arrest, the company’s own internal documents have shown.

We have helped thousands of clients nationwide receive full and fair compensation from medical product manufacturers whose products cause harm.
