TVM Related Injuries

Since 2005, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received more than 3,874 reports of injuries to women who have had transvaginal mesh (TVM) procedures to treat Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP) and Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI).

In response, the FDA issued safety warnings in 2008 and 2011 about the risks and dangers of TVM. The 2011 report concluded that serious complications from using TVM to repair POP are not rare. This is a change from the conclusion the FDA drew in 2008.

The injury lawyers at The Driscoll Firm, LLC, are investigating national claims of injuries and adverse effects associated with TVM. If you or a loved one has had a TVM implant and suffers from pelvic or groin pain, especially during sex, vaginal bleeding, infections or urinary problems, you may have a legal right to compensation. The most common complication from TVM implants is mesh erosion through the vagina (also called exposure, extrusion or protrusion). Pain, bleeding, discomfort and infection can result. Mesh erosion can require multiple surgeries and can be debilitating for some women. In some cases, the subsequent surgeries do not resolve the complications.

Significantly, the 2011 FDA update pointed out a previously unidentified risk – mesh contraction, or shrinkage – which can cause vaginal tightening and pain.

Other complications reported by the FDA:

  • Severe pelvic pain
  • Painful sexual intercourse (dyspareunia)
  • Inability to engage in sexual intercourse
  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Organ perforation from surgical tools used in the mesh placement procedure
  • Urinary problems
  • Recurrent prolapse
  • Neuro-muscular problems
  • Vaginal scarring
  • Emotional problems

TVM is a permanent implant. Complete removal may not be possible and may not result in complete resolution of all complications, according to the 2011 FDA report.
