Actos Bladder Cancer

Actos and the Link to Bladder Cancer

The Driscoll Firm, LLC, is currently investigating claims of injury and death from bladder or urinary tract cancer in patients who have taken the diabetes drug Actos.

In a July 15, 2011, Safety Announcement, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned the public that use of Actos for more than one year may be associated with an increased risk of bladder cancer. Changes in the Actos prescription label were made to indicate this risk.

More than two million patients take Actos annually. Thousands have filed injury lawsuits alleging harm as a result of Actos use, including a number of suits being litigated by The Driscoll Firm, LLC

If you have developed bladder cancer while being treated for diabetes with Actos, the cancer may be directly associated with your Actos use. You might have a legal right to compensation. FDA Warns of Actos Dangers

The FDA warning came after the agency reviewed data from a five-year interim analysis of an ongoing, ten-year epidemiological study. The results showed an increased risk of bladder cancer among patients with the longest exposure to Actos and in those exposed to the highest cumulative dose of the drug.

A similar study in France suggests an increased risk of bladder cancer with Actos. Based on the results of this study, France has suspended the use of Actos, and Germany has recommended that it not be prescribed to new patients.

Here in the United States, the FDA has advised healthcare professionals to:

  • Not use Actos in patients with active bladder cancer.
  • Use Actos with caution in patients with a prior history of bladder cancer.
  • Weigh the benefits of blood sugar control with Actos against the unknown risks for cancer recurrence.
  • Counsel patients to report any signs or symptoms of blood in the urine, urinary urgency, pain on urination, or back or abdominal pain, as these may be due to bladder cancer.
  • Encourage patients to read the Medication Guide they get with their Actos medicine.
